Use a Font Generator to Add a Name to the Droid Quilt

This week, Lynn shares how to use a font generator like dafont.com to create an applique design, specifically to use Star Wars font to add a name to the Droid quilt! There’s still plenty time to add applique to your Star Wars quilt before the premier of the next movie.

You aren’t limited to just Star Wars applique or scifi either; using a font generator site can add names to all sorts of quilts, including very scrappy traditionally pieced quilts. The trick to getting the applique to stand out is to use a fabric for the applique that contrasts, or has edge, with the background piecing, so this could mean using an applique fabric that is related but not in the actual quilt itself. One suggestion is to add a second layer of applique that is 2-5% bigger than the actual applique name to give it a base that stands out from the background design.  This technique is pretty common on college campuses in the US with sororities who use the Greek letters on t-shirts (shout out to my sisters in the Omega Phi Alpha service sorority, as we all had these shirts!).

Don’t forget you can get the Droid pattern, take the online class, or get a fabric kit if you need supplies.
