#SummerReadingQAL – Week 1

Welcome to the official 1st week of the Summer Reading Quilt Along! This week, we’re starting off easy with the first two blocks in the pattern, conveniently blocks 1 & 2.

If you haven’t gotten the pattern yet, it’s not too late! We’re using Daisy Frederick’s “Bookshelf Quilt” pattern on Craftsy. The cost is $5.95, and in that you get all 16 blocks for the bookshelf pattern and the assembly instructions for the basic bookshelf.

Here are Pam’s versions of blocks 1 & 2:

You’ll note that although there are value similarities in the book fabrics, the differences come from the pattern of the fabrics to help make the books distinct from each other.  Worth noting that one of the fabrics is a popcorn print, although I’m not quite sure there’s enough popcorn lore in the world to fill a book?

We also wanted to sneak peek the alternate block if you’d like to incorporate the idea of an audiobook into your bookshelf.  Pam is still refining the pattern in EQ7 and expects it to go up on May 27th so you’ve got it to sub in for any of the blocks in the future weeks.

This week, Pam and Lynn are likely reading about dragons.  Pam’s gotten sucked into the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik, and Lynn has been casting a wide net on 1700’s Scottish stories (thanks to Outlander). Soon she’ll be sucked into Temeraire as well, as happened when Pam got her hooked on Outlander.

Don’t forget to share your in-progress pics on social media with the #SummerReadingQAL hashtag, and tell us what you’re reading (or listening to!).

  2. I finished my first two blocks! Yay! So excited for these. I increased the size on mine to about 9″ blocks to accommodate machine embroidering titles on the book spines. I didn’t actually do the math to figure out how big that will make the finished quilt, just enlarged until I thought the book sizes would generally work with some of my embroidery fonts. I have plenty of scraps and fat quarters, etc. for the book fabrics and have a lot of black for background, so I should be good on fabric until I get to sashing/shelving and borders.
